About Alpha Arbutin

Alpha arbutin is the gentlest of the effective brightening actives — which makes it the one that suits skin that reacts badly to everything else.

What Alpha Arbutin Is

Alpha arbutin is a naturally derived compound found in bearberry, cranberry and mulberry. Structurally it's a form of hydroquinone with a sugar molecule attached.

That attachment is the point. It makes the molecule release slowly and gently once on the skin, rather than acting all at once. You get tyrosinase inhibition — the same mechanism that fades dark spots — without the irritation and sensitivity associated with hydroquinone itself.

Slower, gentler, and safe for long-term use. That's the trade.

Alpha vs Beta Arbutin

You'll see both. Alpha arbutin is the more stable and more effective form — research suggests it inhibits tyrosinase more strongly than beta arbutin at the same concentration.

If a product lists "arbutin" without specifying, it's worth asking which.

Why It's Paired With Kojic Acid

Both target tyrosinase, the enzyme skin uses to make melanin — but by different routes. Kojic acid acts more directly; alpha arbutin more gradually.

Together they inhibit the same enzyme from two angles, which works better than a higher dose of either alone, and allows lower concentrations of each. Lower doses, less irritation, same result.

Products With Alpha Arbutin

Skin Brightening Cleanser — Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin & Vitamin E · 237ml · Rs. 2,000

Two melanin inhibitors plus an antioxidant. Suitable for daily use, including on skin that finds stronger brightening products irritating.

Best for: dark spots, uneven tone, sensitive skin dealing with pigmentation

Skin Brightening Bundle · Rs. 3,780

The cleanser with the Glycolic Acid 7% Toner. Pigmentation forms in two stages — melanin produced in deeper layers, then deposited in surface cells. Arbutin and kojic acid slow the first; glycolic acid clears the second. Covering both is why this works better than either alone.

What to Expect

Alpha arbutin is gradual by design. Expect four to eight weeks before dark spots visibly lighten, and longer for deeper or older pigmentation.

That slowness is the feature, not a flaw — faster brightening agents come with irritation, and irritated skin produces more pigment rather than less.

Daily sunscreen is essential. UV triggers the melanin production you're trying to slow, so without it you're working against yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is alpha arbutin?
A naturally derived brightening agent that inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme the skin uses to produce melanin. It's a gentler relative of hydroquinone, suitable for long-term use.

What is the alpha arbutin price in Pakistan?
The Skin Brightening Cleanser containing alpha arbutin, kojic acid and vitamin E is Rs. 2,000 for 237ml. The bundle with the glycolic acid toner is Rs. 3,780.

Is alpha arbutin good for dark spots?
Yes — it's one of the better-tolerated options for pigmentation. Results are gradual, over weeks rather than days.

What are the side effects?
Few, which is the main reason to choose it. Occasional mild irritation on very sensitive skin. Patch test first, and pair it with daily sunscreen.

Alpha arbutin or kojic acid?
Arbutin is gentler and slower; kojic acid more direct. Used together they're more effective than either alone, which is why both are in the same cleanser.

Can I use it with vitamin C?
Yes — they inhibit melanin by different mechanisms, so they complement each other. Vitamin C in the morning, brightening cleanser morning and evening.

Does it lighten natural skin tone?
No. It slows pigment production, which fades dark spots and evens patchy tone. It won't change your base skin colour, and nothing safe does.

How long until I see results?
Four to eight weeks with consistent use and daily sunscreen.
