Open Pores
Products that make open pores look smaller — niacinamide to regulate the oil that stretches them, glycolic acid to clear the buildup around them, and gentle exfoliation to keep the surface smooth. From Rs. 875.
First, the Honest Part
Pores don't have muscles. They can't open, close, or permanently shrink. Their size is largely genetic, and anything promising to close them permanently is selling something that doesn't exist.
What actually changes is how visible they are — and that changes a lot. A pore looks larger when it's stretched by trapped oil and dead skin, and when the skin around it is rough enough to cast shadows. Clear the congestion, regulate the oil, smooth the surface, and the same pore becomes noticeably harder to see.
That's an achievable result. It just isn't the same as closing them.
The Products
Super Charged 10% Niacinamide Serum · 30ml · Rs. 1,720
The main one · every morning
Niacinamide regulates how much sebum your skin produces. Less oil means less stretching the pore wall, which over a couple of months is what visibly reduces their appearance.
At 10%, the concentration most clinical work supports. It's also the best tolerated active in skincare — it conflicts with almost nothing and rarely irritates, so it's the sensible thing to start with if you're only buying one product.
- Regulates sebum production over weeks
- Minimises the appearance of enlarged pores
- Calms redness and post-breakout marks
- Strengthens the barrier alongside exfoliating actives
Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution · 250ml · Rs. 2,000
2 to 4 evenings a week
Glycolic acid is an AHA — water-soluble, working on the skin's surface. It clears the dead cell buildup that collects around pore openings and makes them look wider than they are, and smooths the surrounding texture so pores cast less shadow.
It works on the surface rather than inside the pore. For blackheads and deeper congestion, you want a BHA — see below.
Peach Perfect Scrub · Rs. 875
Once or twice a week
Physical exfoliation for the surface buildup that makes pores more obvious. The most immediate effect here — visible the same day — though the shortest-lived without the rest.
Never on the same day as the toner. Over-exfoliation irritates, and irritated skin produces more oil.
Rapid Glow Hyaluronic Acid Serum — 2% · 30ml · Rs. 1,720
Morning and evening
The counterintuitive one. Skin that's dehydrated produces more oil to compensate, and oily skin is dehydrated more often than people expect. Hyaluronic acid adds water without adding oil — which is frequently the missing step in a routine aimed at pores.
If Blackheads Are the Real Problem
Pores that look dark rather than just large are usually blackheads — oxidised oil sitting in the pore opening. Glycolic acid works on the surface and won't reach that.
Salicylic acid will. It's a BHA, oil-soluble, so it dissolves into sebum and gets inside the pore. The Acne Control Cleanser at 2% salicylic acid is the product for that, and it pairs well with everything here.
How to Use Them
Every morning: cleanse → niacinamide → moisturizer → SPF
2–4 evenings a week: cleanse → glycolic acid toner → wait 3–5 minutes → moisturizer
Once or twice a week: scrub instead of your usual cleanse, on a non-toner evening
Don't skip moisturizer. Stripping oily skin makes it produce more oil, which stretches pores further. A non-comedogenic moisturizer is part of the solution, not a compromise.
What to Expect
| Timeline | What you'll notice |
|---|---|
| Same day | Smoother surface after scrubbing |
| Weeks 2–3 | Less oil through the day, less midday shine |
| Weeks 6–8 | Pores visibly less prominent |
| Month 3+ | Sustained change, provided you keep going |
Pore appearance is one of the slower things to shift, because it depends on oil production changing rather than something being removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which serum is best for open pores?
Niacinamide at 10%. It reduces the oil that stretches pores, which is the underlying cause rather than the symptom. Rs. 1,720 for 30ml, and it suits almost every skin type.
Can open pores be closed permanently?
No. Pores have no muscle and can't open or close — their size is largely genetic. What changes is visibility: clear the congestion, reduce the oil, smooth the surrounding texture, and they become much harder to see. Any product claiming to close them permanently is overpromising.
How do I minimise open pores on my face?
Three things together — regulate oil with niacinamide, exfoliate the buildup around the opening, and keep skin hydrated so it doesn't overproduce. Consistency over two to three months matters more than any single product.
What is the best face wash for open pores?
One that cleans without stripping. Harsh washes trigger more oil, which makes pores worse over a few weeks. If blackheads are the issue, a 2% salicylic acid cleanser gets inside the pore where surface products can't.
Does salicylic acid help with open pores?
Yes, particularly for blackheads and congestion — it's oil-soluble, so it works inside the pore. Glycolic acid works on the surface around it. They're complementary rather than interchangeable.
Why do my pores look bigger on my nose?
Sebaceous glands are larger and denser there, so they produce more oil and the pores are naturally wider. It's the hardest area to change and the most normal to have.
Do pore strips work?
They pull out surface plugs temporarily and do nothing about oil production, so everything returns within days. Regular exfoliation and oil regulation achieve more.
Do I need moisturizer if my skin is oily?
Yes. Dehydrated skin produces more oil to compensate, which is what stretches pores. Skipping moisturizer works against you here.
