Historically "sunblock" implied a mineral formula sitting on the surface, and "sunscreen" a chemical one absorbing UV. In practice most modern products do both, and regulators in several markets no longer permit "sunblock" on labels — because nothing blocks all UV.

Why the Range Is So Wide
Import markup
The biggest single factor. Shipping, duties, distributor and retailer margin all stack on top of the original price. A sunscreen that sells for the equivalent of Rs. 1,200 abroad can land here at Rs. 3,500 for the same tube.
You're not paying for better UV filters. You're paying for the journey.
Bottle size — the one people miss
This distorts more comparisons than anything else. A lot of imported sunscreens come in 50ml or 60ml tubes.
Used properly — two finger-lengths for face and neck, reapplied — a 50ml tube lasts around three weeks. A 120ml bottle lasts two months or more.

SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB. SPF 50 blocks 98%. SPF 70 blocks 98.6%. The differences narrow sharply as the number climbs, and a higher SPF doesn't justify a large price jump.
Applying enough matters far more. Most people use a quarter of the recommended amount, which turns an SPF 50 into roughly an SPF 15.
The Real Test of Value
Sunscreen is the one skincare product where cost per use is the only figure that counts — because it needs to be used every single day, and reapplied.
An expensive sunscreen you ration is worse than a moderate one you apply generously. Rationing is the most common reason sunscreen underperforms in practice, and small expensive bottles encourage it.
Three questions before buying:
- What's the price per ml? Divide.
- Will you apply enough? If the price makes you hesitate, it's the wrong product.
- Will you wear it daily? Texture decides this, not SPF.

- Does it say broad-spectrum? If not, it may only cover UVB — leaving out the wavelength that drives pigmentation and ageing.
- Is the SPF clearly stated? Vague "sun protection" claims aren't the same thing.
- Is the seller legitimate? Counterfeit sunscreen is common on marketplace listings, and a fake offers no protection at any price.
- Is the bottle a usable size? A very small cheap tube isn't a bargain.
A mid-range local product with clear broad-spectrum SPF 50 usually beats both a vague budget one and an imported premium one on value.
